The Personal Statement is a crucial part of the university application process, and many employers ask candidates to write a statement in support of their application. It is an opportunity to sell yourself to the Admissions Officers or employer – why should they give you a place on their course, or interview you for that job? What you write may be the deciding factor.
Top Tips for writing the perfect Personal Statement |
- Be prepared to write at least two drafts.
- Writing about your reasons for choosing your courses and your personal skills and qualities should take about 60% of the statement.
- Write decisive opening and closing sentences. Organise everything in between into clear paragraphs.
- Be enthusiastic about the courses you are applying for.
- Be ready to explain why you have chosen these courses.
- Be positive about the skills you have – and you will have many!
- When writing about school activities and hobbies, say why they are important to you and what you have learned from them.
- If you are taking a gap year explain how your planned activities will be relevant to your course.
- Check your grammar and spelling, and ask someone else to read the statement through.
- Set up an email for yourself with a “sensible” address – dizzyblonde@hotmail.com does not give the right impression!
